CHAPTER TEN

Edward, 3025 AG

Deep breaths. Deep, slow breaths.

Mercedes was pressed against my chest, her back crushed against the side of the elevator. Only the wider interior of the cab and the shooter’s lack of an angle kept us safe. Bianca was too stunned by our presence upstairs to have put this together. That meant her boy-toy TJ didn’t take so kindly to the picture we’d taken upstairs. What in the hell was he even thinking?

Mr. Kim was still shouting something from my holo on the floor, but I couldn’t make it out. My guess was he was telling me to hold tight while a strike team was dispatched. Easier said than done when some idiot was dumping rounds from an automatic rifle into the elevator you were standing in. A scream escaped my lips as something slammed into my leg. Mercedes pulled me against her. It was the only thing that kept me from falling out into the open.

I would have been torn apart.

My leg hurt, but I didn’t think I’d been shot. Slowly, I tested the limb as the bullets continued to fire. It must have been a ricochet or some shrapnel. It was bleeding, but for now, it could still hold all my weight if I needed it to. The smell of strawberries tickled my nostrils, and I knew it was Mercedes’ shampoo. Anyone who put her in danger had to be dealt with. I wouldn’t have her looking over her shoulder for another attack.

The guns felt heavy in my hands, but in reality, it was only the weight of the moment. I knew what I would do when the bullets stopped. I’d never done it before, though. Like the buzzer in my fencing matches, the sound of TJ reloading would set me free.

I counted down the seconds in my head as I tried to loosen my stiff limbs.

Then the moment was upon me. TJ’s gun clicked empty.

I spun out of the door and fired a wild shot into the garage before slamming against the other side of the elevator. The move wasn’t super-smooth, but it did a couple of things. The return fire might slow down the person who was reloading. Getting shot at had that effect on people. It also confirmed the shooter was alone. Knowing it was only the three of us in the garage was all I needed to burst into action.

I stepped from the elevator and fired the gun Mercedes had taken from TJ. One shot with each step as I started to angle around the black sedan. If the person behind the car was experienced, they would have finished reloading by now, and I would have been in real trouble.

TJ wasn’t that guy.

He’d pressed up against the side of his car so hard it looked like he was trying to sink into it. His body shook like a leaf. There wasn’t an ounce of pity in my heart. Only the revolver clicking empty saved him. He heard it and started reloading the rifle.
